In my vocal and piano instruction I try to create a truly individualized experience for my students. I build on the concept that “no two voices are the same” by customizing lessons and tailoring my approach to a student’s specific needs. Because of the complex psychological issues particular to singing, a voice lesson can feel like a therapy session and a music lesson in one. With this in mind, I try to be a sensitive and encouraging teacher, working to build confidence as well as technique. It is also a course in physiology, incorporating crucial instruction on vocal health to build and preserve good singing habits. My formal approach comes from work renowned Alexander Technique teacher Dr. Karl Snider, who emphasized the importance of releasing physical and mental tension in order to free the voice. I believe that technique and musicality can be taught using any vocal style and use my experience in rock, pop, jazz, blues, musical theater and classical music to tap into a student’s interest and preference. A bit of music history, music theory, ear training and improvisation can be incorporated based on the goals of the student.
I have taught a variety of students ranging from age 4 to adults, with diverse musical backgrounds and experience. My teaching experience comes from voice and piano instruction with professional studios in New York and Los Angeles in both group and private lessons. I currently maintain a home studio in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
